MIchael Swaine's Free Mending Library

Every fifteenth of the month for the first fifteen years of this century, rain or shine, Michael Swaine trundled his salvaged treadle machine on a repurposed ice cream cart to an abandoned alley in San Francisco’s Tenderloin with a mission: to mend.

Part living artwork, part public service, Michael called this The Free Mending Library; a place to mend holes in our life,” and that is exactly what happened, as strangers became regulars became friends. “You are the only one who listens to me,” one of them told him. "It made the city slow down," remembers Michael. "This project changed who I am, these moments of amazing humanity. It was an honor for me to sit there.”
